We had sloppy joes for lunch today. Sloppy joes are one of those meals that I love -- quick, easy, cheap, everyone likes them, and despite the name there's not usually much of a mess to clean up.
BUT...we are not allowed to call them "sloppy joes." The meat is on a hamburger bun, and according to Micah, it therefore must be called a hamburger. He will eat them if he never hears anyone refer to them as "sloppy joes." But if someone slips, he's done. He won't eat another bite.
Conner however, likes to call them "sloppy joes." He thinks it's a funny name...and I think he kind of likes to get Micah in trouble that way...
So we call them "hamburgers," and then make it a point to send a not-so-sly wink Conner's direction. He'll agree that they're "hamburgers" and wink back, ecstatic that he gets to be in on tricking Micah. Maybe it's not the best parenting technique...but it this case it works.
And to add to the meal time food-name-technicalities, Micah wouldn't call the cut-up carrots that we were eating "carrot sticks." They were too big for that. He called them "carrot branches." :)
