Micah's 1st Birthday

Today Micah turns one year old. How do these first birthdays sneak up on us so quickly? It just doesn't seem like it could be an entire year ago when he was born! (If you're interested you can read Bret's blog post from the day Micah was born - http://www.bretwells.com/, under archives in February 2006).

But...back to what's going on today! Gammie and Poppy surprised us and came to join the fun!
We got to bust a pinata. That was lots of fun. Here's Micah's birthday cake. Not the best ever, but I'm proud of myself that I did it instead of just buying one!Micah didn't really know what to do with the cake at first,
but Conner ended up being an excellent teacher (of course!) Don't you just love 1st birthday pictures?!

Mardi Gras Parade

We got to go to our first Mardi Gras parade last night. The McMullens, our sweet friends from chuch, invited us to come with them to the Krewe of Eve parade. This is the one with the most family-friendly reputation, the best one, they say, to bring your kids to. We were very excited, but had no idea what to expect.

Conner spent a lot of time on Bret's shoulders, up high to see the floats better and catch more beads.

Micah and I cuddled a lot at first, trying to keep warm...

...but he eventually feel asleep on Mr. Ed's shoulder and spent the rest of the night there.

...and so did Mommy and Daddy!
This morning we got to re-live the fun as we went through our backpacks full of loot. We lost count after we got to 2oo strings of beads, not to mention the cups, stuffed animals, and balls!

We had lots of fun. thank you, McMullens and Gilberts. This parade was so much crazier and more fun than we ever could have imagined. We are so glad to have experienced a Mardi Gras parade while we were here. Have a happy Mardi Gras!

Lake Pontchartrain

It was a gorgeous day today, so the boys and I loaded up and decided to go to the lake front. We walked along the lake for awhile, played on the playground, and then walked back. On our way back, we stopped to get a good look at the water. It was super exciting when Conner threw a rock in and it made a splash!
Then he decided to walk down the steps to get a closer look. Now, Lake Pontchartrain is a huge lake, but it is not very deep. The average depth is only about 30 feet, and right here close to shore it is extremely shallow. If you look closely, there are only about two steps underwater here, and the slope down is very gradual.
It's a good thing, because, even though he was told not to, being the 3-year-old boy that he is, Conner stepped onto one of those wet steps. Being wet all of the time, it was covered in moss and very slick, and he of course fell. What was funny is that as he got over the initial shock and stood back up, he caught sight of a radio tower down the shoreline a little ways, and excitedly exclaimed, "Look, Mommy! It's the Leaning Tower of Pisa!"
